Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced he is ending military partnerships with multiple highly selective universities that have long educated service members. Inside Higher Ed and Higher Ed Dive confirmed the announcements.

Hegseth made the announcements via memos and posts on X (formerly Twitter). However, as Inside Higher Ed reported: 'the defense secretary's memos and X videos have left a muddied picture of which programs are being canceled at which institutions and for what reasons.'

It remains unclear which specific universities have been targeted, which have been favored, and what replacement programs the Pentagon plans. The institutions affected have served as pipelines for military officers pursuing graduate education in national security, engineering, and public policy.

The moves come amid the broader administration crackdown on universities, threatening loss of federal funding for institutions that don't comply with policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
