NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday, sending the agency's newest and most powerful wide-field observatory into orbit. The telescope, named after NASA's first Chief of Astronomy, is designed to survey vast stretches of the universe with a field of view roughly 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

The Roman telescope's primary scientific objectives include mapping the large-scale structure of the universe to better understand dark energy, surveying for exoplanets through gravitational microlensing, and conducting wide-field imaging surveys across infrared wavelengths. Scientists expect the mission to produce data that could fundamentally reshape understanding of how the universe evolved and whether other Earth-like worlds exist beyond our solar system.

The spacecraft will operate from the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, the same orbital position used by the James Webb Space Telescope, approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. From that stable vantage point, it can conduct continuous, deep-sky observations without interference from Earth's heat or light.

The mission has been in development for more than a decade and carries a price tag in the billions of dollars, making it one of NASA's flagship science investments. The telescope's 2.4-meter primary mirror matches the size of the Hubble's but delivers a dramatically wider field of view, enabling Roman to complete in hours surveys that would take Hubble years to perform.

NASA officials described the launch as a major milestone for astrophysics, saying Roman is expected to generate more observational data in its first year than the combined total of all previous space telescopes. The mission is planned to last at least five years, with the possibility of extension.
