A Ukrainian drone attack on Nizhnekamsk, a city in Russia's Tatarstan republic roughly 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, killed at least 12 people on Sunday, Russian authorities confirmed. The strike represents one of the deepest and deadliest drone attacks on Russian territory since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Nizhnekamsk is a major industrial center home to significant oil refining and petrochemical infrastructure. Russian officials said the drones caused casualties among civilians and struck populated areas of the city. Emergency response teams were deployed to the site, and local authorities declared a state of emergency following the attack.

Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for the strike, consistent with its typical practice regarding long-range drone operations inside Russia. Kyiv has previously acknowledged conducting drone campaigns targeting Russian energy and military-industrial infrastructure as part of its broader war strategy.

The attack comes amid continued intense fighting along multiple fronts in eastern and southern Ukraine, as well as an ongoing exchange of long-range strikes between the two countries. Russia has continued its own missile and drone barrages against Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure in recent weeks.

Russian officials condemned the strike as an act of terrorism targeting civilians. The death toll of 12 is based on figures released by regional authorities, and the number could rise as search and rescue operations continue at affected sites.
