Ukraine struck a major Russian oil refinery using long-range drones, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed, marking one of the more consequential infrastructure attacks of the war. The strike is part of Ukraine's broader campaign to degrade Russia's energy production capacity and its ability to fund and sustain its military operations.

The attack occurred as both sides escalated operations. Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone barrage targeting the Kyiv region, killing at least 17 people. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a number of the incoming projectiles, but the volume of the assault overwhelmed some defensive systems, resulting in significant civilian casualties.

In a separate incident, a drone strike at a crowded Russian beach killed seven people, including four children, sending beachgoers fleeing in panic. Russia attributed the attack to Ukraine, though the full circumstances remain under investigation. The incident drew widespread attention given the civilian setting.

The competing strikes underscore the war's ongoing intensity more than two years into Russia's full-scale invasion. Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drone capabilities to strike deep into Russian territory, targeting fuel infrastructure and logistics hubs that support Moscow's frontline forces.

Zelenskyy has repeatedly framed attacks on Russian oil facilities as a legitimate military strategy, arguing that degrading Russia's energy revenue weakens its capacity to continue the war. Russia, meanwhile, has continued its campaign of mass aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
